Square flanges are used in hydraulic systems to connect a pipe to another pipe or component. Square flanges are, as the name suggests, square in shape. Square flanges are manufactured in compliance with various country standards, and they come in a variety of pressure ratings to serve their purpose.

Square flanges provide for seamless passage of liquids through stainless steel pipes or hydraulic systems. Square flanges exist in a range of sizes, from 1/4 inch to 6 inch. The most frequent system installation sizes are 1/2 to 2 inches.

What are Square Flanges

1 How do you identify a square flanges?
Square flanges come in two materials: steel and stainless steel. It is composed of SF440A steel or SS316 stainless steel. Designed to meet JIS B2291 and JIS F7806 specifications. This means that it is compatible with all Japanese Industrial Standard pipes used in water systems, offshore projects, and oil fields. Square flanges can sustain high pressure from linked pipes and come in three pressure scales: 210kg/cm², 280kg/cm², and 350kg/cm².

Among the various standards defining flange design and specifications, the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) B2291 and F7806 standards are generally known for their quality and dependability, assuring consistency and compatibility across different systems. It's also two popular options recognized for their durability, strength, and adaptability.

JIS B2291 Square Flanges are hydraulic system components that connect pipes or tubes. They are distinguished by their strong construction and precision dimensions. They are built to resist high pressure and provide leak-free connections. Square flanges are available in a variety of diameters and pressure ratings to meet the needs of diverse applications.

2. Why square flanges are used in piping?
Square flanges serve several important functions in piping systems, including ensuring secure connections between pipes and equipment, providing structural support to withstand pressure and stress, allowing for easy installation and maintenance with standardized dimensions, and improving the overall aesthetic appeal of the system.

The square flange is extremely helpful in a variety of high-pressure sectors, including connections between pipes as well as between pipes and other components required to operate a complete system. It is commonly used as a type of pipe fitting. The square flange end connection is a welding type known as socket weld (weld-in). The pipe must be inserted into the flange's recessed area or socketed to provide a plain end. Other connections can be customized upon request.

The square flange has several applications, although it is most commonly used in small diameter pipelines. It is not advised for larger diameter pipes with a high weight load functioning inside. However, square flanges are not well suited to working in high torque environments.

3. What are different types of flanges?
There are various configurations, including SHAB, SSAB, KAB, and blind flange.
SHAB is the most commonly used in the industry, having a maximum pressure of 210kg/cm² and utilized in conjunction with hexagon bolts.
SSAB can also withstand pressure up to 210kg/cm². However, the body is smaller than SHAB and is used with Allan cap screws.
KAB has a similar design to SHAB, but with a higher pressure rating of 280kg/cm² or 350kg/cm².
Square Blind Flanges are used to shut the system's end flow.
LSA Square Flanges are a distinct variety of O-ring side square flanges with a L shape design in the interior flow.

A complete set of square flanges includes five critical components. It consists of one female side labeled "A," one male side labeled "B," four hexagon or allen cap screws, one NBR 70/90 oring, and four hexagon nuts (optional). Hexagon nuts are used with hexagon bolts to tighten both the male and female sides.

4. Why square flanges are used in piping?
Shipbuilding
Square Flanges are essential for connecting fuel, water, and other fluid-filled piping systems. To maintain a dependable fluid system, which contributes to the safety and efficiency of maritime operations.

Maritime Engineering
Square flanges are commonly used in piping systems on ships, offshore platforms, and maritime structures due to their exceptional corrosion resistance and high strength construction.

Oil and Gas Industry
Square flanges are used in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations like drilling, refining, and transportation. Pipelines, refineries, and petrochemical plants use these to connect and control fluid flow in their piping systems.

Hydraulic Systems
Being able to connect pipes, hoses, and fittings to ensure efficient hydraulic fluid transmission and system pressure. It is widely used in hydraulic machinery, construction equipment, and automotive applications.

Square Flanges Applications

Oil and Gas Processing Dairy and Food Processing
Desalination Pesticides
Pulp and Paper Sugar Factory
Energy industries Power Plants
Ship Building Fertilizers
Machine Building Nuclear
Pharmaceuticals Chemicals
Textile Machinery Synthetic Fibers
Construction Modern Architecture
Refinery & Petrochemicals Water treatment facilities

Square Flanges Marking

Every Standards have clearly requirements for steel flanges’ marking style, usually the marking words include seller’s Logo, buyer’s Logo (OEM), standard number, flange’s type, flange’s pressure, flange’s size, flange’s material, place of origin, heat number and other words for convenient to trace. If the flanges repaired by welding, it must mark on flanges showing this flange repared by welding. If the flange’s dimensions (OD, ID, PCD, Thickness, Holes number, Holes diameter, Tolerance etc) are different with the normal standard, it also must mark on flanges where it is different with normal ones. Another important place is heat number marking, it is the tracing base for every piece flange, and from the heat number we can trace to the beginning of raw material import.

  • The Marking Style for European Standards Flanges, DIN, UNI, EN 1092-1 norms etc
    LOGO, EN 1092-1, TYPE 01, PN16, DN80, 88.9, P265GH, HEAT NUMBER
